Medieval Castle With Centuries-old Park On Cuneo's Alps
Historical complex with origins in the 11th century, rebuilt in the 1930s, 2,700 sqm on five levels and seven and a half hectares of private park and woodland
At 961 meters above sea level, an imposing structure with twenty-six rooms in a dominant position between the Grana Valley and the Maira Valley with a 360-degree view of Monviso and the Cuneo plain.
Perched on a cliff between the Grana Valley and the Maira Valley, at 961 metres above sea level, with a 360-degree view stretching from Monviso to the Cuneo plain and on to the Langhe and the Apennines, this medieval castle is one of the most imposing and historically significant complexes in the Piedmontese Alps. With a gross floor area of 2,700 sqm spread over five levels, twenty-six bedrooms, a state room, a central tower with an exposed brick spiral staircase, eleven bathrooms, a historic cellar and seven and a half hectares of grounds comprising gardens, panoramic terraces and a centuries-old woodland, this property offers an extraordinary base for a restoration project of the highest ambition — a prestigious private residence, a home for numerous guests or a centre of hospitality excellence immersed in the Alpine landscape. The property is currently being surveyed by the FAI — Fondo Ambiente Italiano — a recognition that attests to its historical, architectural and cultural value at a national level.
The earliest documentary records of the property date back to 1098; in the centuries that followed, the castle evolved from a noble residence into a military stronghold and the scene of sieges. Having fallen into disrepair between the 17th and 19th centuries — with some parts sold off as building materials — it was purchased at auction in 1933 by engineer Alessandro Savio, an industrialist who restored it in keeping with the original layout. The elements of greatest architectural merit still visible today date from this phase: the hall of honour with its wooden coffered ceiling and monumental stone fireplace, and the central tower housing the main spiral staircase, a space of rare quality within the panorama of 20th-century Piedmontese architecture.
