12th-century Fortress On Piacenza's Hills
Castle of great historical prestige in a stunning high position overlooking Emilia Romagna's countryside
Old castle surrounded by a 27-hectare park for sale near Piacenza
Just 30 minutes from Piacenza, on the hills just above the town, there is this 12th-century fortress surrounded by 27 hectares of grounds for sale in the leafy Val Riglio.
Renovated several times over the centuries, the castle has undergone a very careful restoration in the last twenty-five years in strict compliance with its enormous historical prestige and the original architectural structure, built in stone on a rectangular plan, with a square corner keep adorned with Guelph crenellations. In the pediment, we can still admire the original joints of the bridge and the drawbridge.
Today fully furnished, this castle blends the charm of historical Tuscan estate with the one of ancient Provençal houses.
Its striking 1,100 square meters of interiors include a 300-sqm farmhouse and a 200-sqm house used for caretakers, positioned beyond the gate that marks the entrance to the property's vast park, which offers 27 hectares of perfectly manicured lawns, centuries-old trees, botanical gardens, and forests.
Built in the 12th century on the remains of a Roman fortification for the strategic defense of the Riglio valley, this castle was owned by the Confalonieri until 1492, when it passed into the hands of the powerful Nicelli family, lords of the Nure valley for centuries. In 1842 it became the property of the Marazzani counts, who in 1955 ceded the fortress to Mons. Stefano Fumagalli, archpriest of San Polo. In 1957, the Ordinariate of the nuns received the entire property as a gift, making it a retirement home for cloistered nuns.
Today, its perfect state of conservation and the pleasant context, in a quiet hilly area of the province of Piacenza, make it an object of great historical, artistic and cultural value, easily accessible from all the major towns in northern Italy.
