Charming Castle For Sale In The Carso Area
Castle with grounds in a charming high position near Gorizia
Majestic 16th-century fortress surrounded by the typical hilly landscape of the Carso area
In a charming high position between the vast upland of the Carso area and Friuli's plains, where the river Vipacco meets the river Isonzo, there is this old castle for sale.
Immersed in the typically hilly landscape of the Carso area and surrounded by a vast forest, this prestigious property includes a recently-renovated castle measuring approximately 1,850 sqm, to be customized, and the ruins of the former cellar, of the circular south-east tower, of the circular north-east tower, of the former stables and of the outbuilding.
This property has a long history full of intriguing anecdotes: from the first settlements of the Bronze Age with Neolithic battlements to the Middle Ages and the legend of the arrival of King Richard "the Lionheart" returning from the Crusades; from nobility and Protestantism to the Gradiscane Wars of 1615; the First World War and the destruction of the castle and vineyards until the Second World War, when the ruins of the castle were completely abandoned to their fate. In 1988 the current property began a recovery and restoration work that lasted until 2013. Today the property, thanks to its immense charm and historical value, is ideal both as a high-quality home, as an academic center for cultural and artistic events or, again, as a luxury hotel, with an approved project that envisages the construction of 18 rooms, potentially expandable up to 40, using the buildings to be restored.
According to historical documents and archival photographs, in the Renaissance period the castle consisted of a square central body of four floors with four five-level towers, while the half-façade turret on the back was added at a later time.
With its perimeter protected by a moat with a surrounding wall, the castle, built around the year 1500, actually stands on a pre-existing fortified complex. The 4 towers were all also built in different times, while the roofs were built in the 18th century in order to gain a further top floor. Most of the original construction and decorative details of the time were reconstructed during the restoration work on the basis of historical photographs, so as to respect the historical traces.
Outside, towards the Vipava River, the protection and safety of the castle have always been guaranteed by a perimeter wall with no openings that stretches between two ancient circular towers with thick walls. Next to the south-east tower we can still see the ruins of the old buildings that were used as stables, warehouses and cellars. Attached to the north-east tower, there is also a housing structure for the caretaker. Another building was recently built for residential use, partly on the ruins of the former stables.
The botanical garden that measures over two and a half hectares around the fortress dates back to the early 1900s and offers the perfect green oasis in which to enjoy absolute peace.
