Tuscany Castellina in Chianti

Chianti is an elegant area but is on a personal scale where you can spend your time amidst art, food and tranquillity immersed in the unspoilt Sienese and Florentine hills.
Castellina is one of the main centers of Sienese Chianti, along with Radda and Gaiole, all linked by the agricultural element and from being on the border between Siena and Florence.
Historically, disputes in the wars between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines became wonderful tourist attractions, while today the area is more synonymous with Chianti wine and the Tuscan countryside.
The village of Castellina was created from an ancient Etruscan nucleus of the sixth-seventh century BC but it is the medieval period that forged the current structure.
A strategic point due to its location between Siena and Florence, it formed part of the League of Chianti, an alliance that had as its emblem a black rooster, which subsequently became the name of one of the most famous and renowned wines of Chianti.
Having lost its autonomy midway through the sixteenth century at the end of the war between the Sienese and the Florentines, it became a major agricultural centre. Nowadays it is one of the driving centres for the production of wine.
Especially interesting to see is the fortress with the council chamber, along with the Captain's room, the courtyard with the well and the archaeological museum.
At the Church of SS. Salvatore, which was a post-war reconstruction, works of the Tuscan school can be admired.
